Friendly payment reminder email (3 days late)
This is the first nudge: short, warm and assuming the best. Most late invoices are simply forgotten, so the first email gives your client an easy way to fix it.
Send it 3 days after the due date. It names the invoice, the amount and the due date, gives a pay link, and thanks them if they have already paid.

Quick answers
When should I send a friendly payment reminder?
Small Bot Fix suggests 3 days after the invoice due date. That is soon enough to catch a forgotten invoice and late enough to give the client a fair chance to pay.
What should a friendly payment reminder include?
